Shirley Jennings and Short Hops It was delightful to meet a most unusual pilot, the singular Shirley Jennings who was there with her Campbell Cricket Replica. She had learned to fly and constructed her "Delta-J" with the late, genuinely-admired Chris Julian and, although mechanical problems severely limited her airtime, was readily available to friends and visitors alike. This privately published A4 Softback is a "comprehensive narrative of Shirley's personal experiences from her first trip in a Gyro-Glider, through the Gyroplane building process and onto the completion of her P.P.L.(G) [that's private pilot's license (gyroplanes) for us yanks]. She was particularly gracious when I explained that I had gifted Marion Springer with my copy of her book Short Hops. As a consequence of giving it away at Hofstra to Marion, for whom I hope it will serve as an inspiration to write her own story, I had purchased a new copy. Shirley immediately offered to exchange it for a later edition which had additional pages. This is in my opinion the single best introduction to the world of the gyroplane. Written in an "easy style", it mixes information, emotion, and exultation with understandable explanations of theory and practical observations about the learning process. This is a marvellous book and if I had a friend (or child) who wanted to learn to fly the gyroplane, this would be the single best first gift I could give! I shall treasure the book inscribed "To Bruce - clear skies & happy flying. Shirley & Delta-J" and she now proudly wears my CarterCopter hat as I placed the BRA cap on my head. As I had admired her book before meeting Shirley (I still don't understand why she doesn't list herself as the author of this book), it was pure delight to meet her.
